I get this question all the time, so I felt like it deserved it’s own space on the blog. “Which type of session should I schedule?” “We only need a couple of pictures so a mini session should be fine right?” Well…it really depends on several things. Let’s dig into this a bit so I can help you make the best decision for your needs.
Mini Sessions are extremely short (typically around 10 minutes). This is great for your schedule and your wallet. It’s also a wonderful way to get a small number of beautiful images with ONE subject. Because mini sessions are so short, your photographer will only have time to focus on one thing, such as one child’s milestone images, or just family photos with the whole family together. It takes a minute to get warmed up in front of the camera and, in order to capture those perfect ‘couple of pictures,’ your photographer will use all 10 minutes and take more than a couple of photos of whatever the subject is. Mini sessions are also meticulously planned out by your photographer. Everything from the date and time, the location, and the overall theme will have already been chosen. No decision making for you! Less stressful perhaps, but also fewer choices.
If you want pictures of your four year old, pictures of your four year old with each parent, and pictures of your year old with both parents and the family dog – you’re going to want a full session. Interested in pictures of your kids together, separate, and with mom – you’re going to want a full session. Need more choices regarding the location of your session? A full session is the way to go. Newborn sessions, in-home sessions, and lifestyle sessions need to be full length. They fundamentally need more time to execute than a mini session would allow. Full length sessions give you the full experience. You get to plan and design and create with your photographer, and your photographer has time to really get creative and visually tell your story. These sessions take a little longer, are more of a financial investment, but also yield a much larger return.
You can ALWAYS ask your photographer for help with this decision! If you still aren’t sure what is the best fit for you, shoot your photographer an email and tell them what you are interested in. They’ll ask all the right questions and tell you exactly which type of session will give you the experience you’re looking for.
